No-Code, Lo-Code and Pinesoft
The History
Since it’s inception in 1994 Pinesoft have been strong advocates of using software to deskill the job of writing software.
Our first three software development platforms were all based on Microsoft platforms. The second two are based on Smalltalk, the powerful true OO development language that came from Xerox Palo Alto Research Centre (Xerox PARC).
CASE Toolkits: Lo-code software development
The first was in essence a Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tool that took a design for classes and the relationships between them and generated persistency code, database schema and software to modify databases to meet the new structure described by the business model. This generated Visual Basic 3 code.
The second of these developed into a complete application development framework. In addition to the capabilities of the first platform it carried enough re-useable software that development times and software quality were significantly enhanced. This suite was largely written in, and generated Visual Basic 6 code. Significant amounts of tightly written low level data access code gave astonishing performance to these Microsoft applications across a broad variety of database platforms.
The Third platform was our last Microsoft based solution. Christened AppFoundry and developing C# code it overcame many of the shortcomings of the Visual Basic platforms However we were still left with the long term maintenance problems of C# and Microsoft stack based solutions. This enhanced the maintenance burden signifcantly.
Smalltalk: No-code software development
PostID
The Fourth solution was developed alongside AppFoundry. Christened PostID it is a true No-Code development platform, which deploys images optimised for running bespoke productivity solutions in the postal and courier markets. PostID has a drag and drop interface to build solutions out of pre-built components without coding. It supports web interfaces, but is primarily designed for running on stand alone workstations. The power and flexibility of Smalltalk was responsible for the extensibility and useability of PostID.

Our Fifth solution, Versatile Edge is, we believe, the future of no-code development platforms. Versatile Edge is a metadata based no-code software development environment. Storing metadata rather than writing software in a traditional coding language means that the business objects and processes themselves are modelled in Versatile Edge.
